En Route To Cochin, India - Day 43

NOTE: We’ve included pictures from yesterday’s Crew Tug-a-War and Slippery Pole events along with a couple of pictures from this morning’s men’s doubles table tennis event.

We wanted to begin with some additional comments from yesterday.

We mentioned that we attended Ken Rees’ lecture on news and how it is changed over the years. It was another wonderful lecture by Ken. For us, the biggest takeaways were three-fold. First, that the youth of our nation is focused less on traditional news such as news broadcast, and print news. Second, that up until the past few years that television news was more focused on presenting the facts and then letting each of us make our own informed decision rather than today when either one news program or various cable news stations try to essentially spoon food us one view. Third, when news used to be less real time that the journalist could actually reflect on the story being covered before presenting it. Sometimes reflection allows us to take a step back before reaching a conclusion.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Crew Tug-a-War and Slippery Poll Contests. As part of the Crew Tug-a-War various departments are represented with ten competing in the event. While they are not as large as some of personnel from other areas the Lido Deck Stewards did make it to the final only to lose in a close match to the Main Dining Room waiters. In the Slippery Pole competition the top male and the top female finalists were selected and both of the finalists happen to have come from the casino. The winner was the female.

Before dinner, we went to the World Cruise Award Ceremony to cheer on those passengers who won awards. Each of the winners designates which country they are playing for. Right now the top three winners are the USA, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Silk Road Specialty Japanese Restaurant last evening. We dined with six other people and had a wonderful time. Everything was wonderful from the cuisine to the service to the conversation and the overall ambience of the room.

Last evening we set the clocks forward one hour as we continue to cruise to Cochin, India.

Even though we set the clocks forward Keith was able to wake up relatively early to enjoy another great workout at the Fitness Center. When he arrived, fellow passenger Brian was already there along with the Executive Chef. A little way into the workout fellow passenger John also arrived and Keith and John spoke for a little while after the workout.

Keith multi-tasked during the workout and watched two other lectures on television that we had missed. One of these included a talk given by special interest lecturer Rick Rose who presented “Our Children are inheriting the World from Us…or are we just borrowing it from them?” He talked about how the USA fits into all of this and his analogy were if the USA were a stock would be buy it. His talk was quite good and we look forward to his additional talks.

After Keith’s workout he stopped by the Lido Café for some coffee and spoke with John’s wife for a little while. Anne Marie worked out on the treadmill for an hour and she also brought back coffee afterwards.

Once again, we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in our room. It was great and we watched the Morning Show while we ate. From time to time Cruise Director Rick Spath and World Cruise Hostess Stacey Huston have been giving the viewers some background information on all of the planning that goes into each cruise. Today, they talked about some of the planning that goes into planning the entertainment for each cruise and the selection of which nights on the cruise will be formal/informal/casual. In addition, they talked about today’s activities and entertainment.

I did manage to call in twice and to correctly answer two trivia questions.

During Captain Glenn’s talk from the bridge he noted that we are sailing in the Indian Ocean and right now we are sailing due East. We are sailing over 19 knots per hour and are on schedule for Cochin. The forecast calls for nice weather.

Today we will share two thoughts of the day from the Captain. The first one is from yesterday and the second one from today.

“Some people travel to see the world and some people travel to open their eyes.”

“Home is not where you live. Home is where your heart is.”

There were lots of activities on board the ship today including two morning talks. The first one is by Destination Lecturer Ken Rees who presented “The Lion and the Tiger.” He talked about how the Indian Raj became the jewel in Britain’s colonial crown as Britain ruled India for over two hundred years. He talked about both the fabulous wealth and the poverty and the emergence of Mahatma Ghandi.

Later in the morning Dr. Jay Wolff gave a talk filling in for the scheduled talk that was to be given by Former Senator Phil Gramm. The former Senator will likely give his talk tomorrow.

At the same time the World Game Events continued.

One of the events was men’s Double Tennis, which Keith competed in. Keith was teamed with a school age boy and they won the Bronze Medal.

After a busy morning schedule, we enjoyed another nice lunch at the Lido Café and once again we each enjoyed a Salad Entrée.

In the afternoon Keith and Anne Marie participated in the Golf Putting event. It is a lot of fun and the event drawing the most participants as the Crystal Cove area is set up for this event. Keith viewed this competition as putt-putt rather than putting and ended up winning one of the Bronze Awards. J.

Anne Marie also took a one hour walk on the Promenade Deck and also sat out by the pool. Keith watched the entire Golf Putting Event and also enjoyed a nice conversation with fellow passengers Bob and Don.

For the past three evenings we have dined at the specialty restaurants so we are looking forward to getting back to the Main Dining Room for dinner this evening. We will post about diner and the other evening activities tomorrow.

TODAY’S THOUGHT OF THE Day….

“We make a living by what we get and make a life by what we give.”

Keith and Anne Marie
